41:54 - New York in the mid 1930's in Color!
Загружено 14 сентября 2021
Extremely interesting long film about New York towards the end of the Great Depression. This film is in colour, motion-stabilized, enhanced and speed-corrected by me. Duration: nearly 42 minutes.
Press the 'SHOW MORE' button for far more info!
The film shows many images of New York's buildings (Empire State, Chrysler and Woolworth buildings a.o), Bridges, Aircraft, Neon lights and Steamships. Especially the footage of the famous ocean liners RMS Queen Mary, which was brand new at that time, and the SS Normandie and SS Conte di Savoia footage (in color!) is intriguing. The film was probably made by a wealthy family involving an elderly lady who appears half a dozen times in the film. Maybe they booked the famous SS Normandie cruise to Rio in Feb.1938 or Feb.1939.

Please note that the film has NOT been artificially colourized; it is original Kodak (?) color film.
Do take a look at the other material on my channel.

Returning to the New York Fashion Week schedule after its two-year digital hiatus, Moschino staged its kitschy, tea-party-inspired show on a rainy runway in Manhattan’s Bryant Park. 23:55 - New York's Homeless Epidemic | Unreported World
Загружено 11 сентября 2021
There’s a homelessness epidemic in New York’s shelter system that is made even worse by the Coronavirus crisis.

With one epidemic feeding another, there is now more homelessness in New York City than at any time since the Great Depression, and it's disproportionately affecting black and brown people. More than 3000 people live on the street, and at least another 60,000 in shelters, including 21,000 children.

Reporter Krishnan Guru-Murthy witnesses the harsh reality of addiction, fear, violence, and intimidation in a system meant to be helping the city’s most vulnerable men, women and children. He also meets the activists fighting to eradicate alleged inequalities in the shelter system.

26:54 - Toshiko Takaezu: Portrait of an Artist
Загружено 11 сентября 2021
Toshiko Takaezu (1922-2011) lived most of her life in rural New Jersey, where she made pots, gardened, and taught ceramics at nearby Princeton University. But she was born in Hawaii to Japanese parents, and the landscapes and traditions of the world she grew up in had a profound influence on her art. In the early 1990s, producer Susan Wallner spent time talking to Toshiko about her life and work. They travelled to Hawaii to see the "devastation forest" and the sunrise at Haleakala. The film includes some of Toshiko's last Princeton students, who were invited to do a raku firing at her home studio. "Toshiko Takaezu: Portrait of an Artist" won a CINE Golden Eagle, and the New York Emmy for Outstanding Original Music went to composer John Hodian for its score.

Ice Blink
2005, Stills (Edinburgh), Cell (London), Parker's Box (New York)

'Ice Blink' is a term which refers to the way that light in the polar regions bounces off pack ice to illuminate the thick clouds above - these itense white regions of sky warning sailors of the pack-ice that lies over the horizon.

Ice Blink was a lecture, exhibition and book that collected together the body of work made during a two month journey to Antarctica in 2004/2005 (travelling with British Antarctic Survey on their research vessel the RSS Earnest Shackleton). The day before each of these exhibitions opened, the lecture Ice Blink was delivered in a nearby lecture theatre. The video works, drawing and photographs from the exhibition were used within the lecture to illustrate a meandering journey through the myths of polar exploration, the apocayptic science eminating from these regions and the bizare colonial politics that still operate accross the frozen continent.

James Kalm takes a break from critiquing the Occupy Wall Street protest and returns to his more noted roll as art world maven with this brief tour of the work of Lisa Yuskavage. For nearly twenty years Yuskavage has been shocking the New York painting audience with her unique melding of pornographically cartoonist imagery. Depicting young women with pendulous breasts and bellies swollen in plentitude, these figures are virtually expanding with erotic potential, made visual through the artist's articulate rendering, and sensual color. This show presents some of the largest painting yet produced by Yuskavage and reveals her increasing interest in vast cinematic landscapes.

She attended Concord High School, where she was valedictorian and won eight academic awards. She was awarded an academic scholarship to Mount Holyoke College in Massachusetts. After two years' study, she left the College and moved to New York City.

During the 1950s she worked for the Academy Photo Offset printing house in New York's Flatiron District and lived in Greenwich Village. She started calling herself Connie, a nickname she had acquired in New York. She began writing songs and performing them for friends, accompanying herself on guitar.

Her music came to the notice of animator and amateur recording engineer Gene Deitch, who had made tape recordings of artists like John Lee Hooker and Pete Seeger in the 1940s. Deitch made a number of tape recordings of Converse in the kitchen of his house in Hastings-on-

Snowfall walk in Times Square, New York City. It's been a year since I last visited New York. I didn't plan a route for this video. My friend living in Brooklyn sent me a text that there would be snowfall in New York the following morning, so I made a 14-hour drive up to New York the day before and crashed in my hotel room in Times Square at 2 am. The next morning it started to snow, but I was still totally exhausted from the night before. This walk is a bit aimless and mostly around Times Square because I had to start work immediately after and was already out of it. I wanted to capture the contrast between this video and my previous videos from 2019. New York is so quiet. Early apologies for all of the cuts in the recording. I stopped to clear water residue off of my camera lens every so often. Binaural audio for an immersive experience.

The Vocaleers
The original members of this vocal group from Harlem, New York, USA, were
Joe Duncan (lead),
Herman Curtis (first tenor),
William Walker (second tenor),
Melvin Walton (baritone)
Teddy Williams (bass).

Biography
One of the pioneering groups of the R&B era, the Vocaleers’ great hit, ‘Is It A Dream?’ (number 4 R&B, 1953), became a part of the repertoires of a myriad of street-corner groups across the country. The group was formed in 1951 and the following year signed with Bobby Robinson’s Red Robin label. Their first release was the ballad ‘Be True’, which established the group’s sound of Duncan’s plaintive lead answered by Curtis’ falsetto, and earned the group local notices. Williams left the unit at this time and was replaced with Lamar Cooper. The Vocaleers made their last record in 1954, after Herman Curtis was replaced with Joe Powell; Curtis joined the Solitaires. The Vocaleers, with slightly different personnel, reunited in the late 50s, but after a
