In the history of modern rational thought, there's hardly a creed more definitive than Objectivism, the philosophy movement created by Russian-American novelist and thinker Ayn Rand. Among the central tenets of Objectivism is the idea that we can gain objective knowledge through the processes of logic and that the pursuit of our own happiness, framed as rational self-interest, is the sole purpose of existence. While such moral code may seem overly cynical, especially in the age of the Charter for Compassion

Rand held that the only moral social system is laissez-faire capitalism. Her political views were strongly individualist and hence anti-statist and anti-Communist. She exalted what she saw as the heroic American values of rational egoism and individualism. Rand detested many prominent liberal and conservative po

Ayn Rand was born in St. Petersburg, Russia, on February 2, 1905. At age six she taught herself to read and two years later discovered her first fictional hero in a French magazine for children, thus capturing the heroic vision which sustained her throughout her life. At the age of nine she decided to make fiction writing her career. Thoroughly opposed to the mysticism and collectivism of Russian culture, she thought of herself as a European writer, especially after encountering Victor Hugo, the writer she

In her first public appearance since husband Frank O'Connor's death, we see a rare personal side of Rand—" As always, the ideas do shine through: the acknowledgement of achievement; the evils of altruism; American schools sacrificing the gifted for the less gifted; the nationalization of American oil interests in the Middle East; the fatal arguments for the existence of God;... and much more.

Rand's greatest influence was Aristotle, especially Organon ("Logic"); she considered Aristotle the greatest philosopher. In particular, her philosophy reflects an Aristotelian epistemology and metaphysics -- both Aristotle and Rand argued that "there exists an objective reality that is independent of mind and that is capable of being known."Although Rand was ultimately critical of Aristotle's ethics, others have noted her egoistic ethics "is of the eudemonistic type, close to Aristotle's own...a system of g

"In an effort to publicize [Atlas Shrugged], Ayn agreed to an interview with Mike Wallace, on his New York television show, 'Night Beat,' the hard-driving program that began his rise to prominence. They liked each other immediately, and were to visit together on a number of occasions over the following years. 'She was perfect grist for the mill of Night Beat,' Mike later said. 'She voiced provocative opinions, she was anti-establishment and utterly unexpected, with a kind of close reasoning and a clarity th

An Interview of Ayn Rand, Author Of Atlas Shrugged. I really enjoyed both of the Atlas Shrugged movies and look forward to seeing the third part next year. Whilst I don't agree with everything Ayn says, she was certainly ahead of her time and "Atlas Shrugged" and George Orwell's book "1984" seems to both be coming true, which is unfortunate. This interview is in the public domain and can be downloaded from here: >My websites:
